Michael Garvey, U.S. Marine, to Receive Purple Heart

This Thursday, Michael Garvey, a Broadneck native, will be awarded the Purple Heart for recently sustaining serious injuries in a battle in Afghanistan.

Garvey, son of Laurie and Peter of Cape St. Claire and brother to Allison, Elizabeth, Kathryn and Joshua, joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 2006, to fight for his country after the September 11, 2001 attacks.

He was injured last week in Afghanistan in the area of Marja. He received four bullet wounds in a gun battle and was flown to Bagram for surgery then to Germany before arriving on U.S. soil at Andrews Air Force Base this week.

Garvey is recovering at Bethesda Naval Hospital. This was Garvey’s second tour of duty. His first was in Iraq in 2009.
