AACC Board Bids Fond Farewell to Smith
The Board of Trustees presented a rocking chair to outgoing president Martha Smith at Tuesday night's meeting as part of her sendoff.
The Anne Arundel Community College's Board of Trustees equipped outgoing president Martha A. Smith with a rocking chair as a farewell gift for her impending retirement.
The Tuesday meeting was the final one that Smith will attend as president. Her 18-year tenure as president ends on Aug. 1. The college's new president, Dawn Lindsay, will begin her service immediately afterward.
Trustee members all had something to say to Smith during a portion of the meeting devoted to her. Many of the board members have worked with Smith since she began serving as the college's fifth president in 1994.
James Johnson Jr.: "This community college is a special place to go to because of you."
Arthur Ebersberger: "It's been a great adventure. We've done a lot together."
Walter Hall: "It's a sad day for me. ... She's been a shining example for everybody who knows her, in the sense that she shows a deep commitment and passion for ensuring that for anyone she touches, she helps bring out the best in them."
James Kleimeier: "I will miss her terribly. More than I can say. She'll have a successor, but not a replacement."
Kimberly Burns: "I think this college is a better place because of you."
Cynthia Robichaud: "You've been awe-inspiring. You not only are involved with the students and faculty, but also so much in the community. That truly motivated me."
Diane Dixon-Proctor: "You will greatly be missed. I will greatly miss your smile... I'm sure you aren't just going to sit in a rocking chair. You will do great things in your retirement."
In return, Smith had some things to tell the board as well.
"We've agreed and disagreed, but you have always supported me and been single-minded in doing the best for the college. I wanted to thank you for that, because that has been unshakable," Smith said.
Smith also gave a farewell speech during the college's 50th commencement, held in May.
