AACC Student Paves the Way for Emerging Local Artists

Chanel Melendez set to open a new art gallery

Chanel Melendez is not your usual art gallery owner.

At the age of twenty-two, she may be the youngest person to oversee an art gallery in Maryland. After hearing words of encouragement from her boyfriend, last month, she made the move to bring her vision to fruition and will soon open "The Unknown Artist" in Annapolis.

The gallery will provide a space to showcase the work of the area's yet-to-be-discovered talent. Melendez says, "I am trying to get locals not currently featured in downtown galleries."

Chanel Melendez is currently studying Elementary Education at Anne Arundel Community College in Arnold. Once she graduates, she intends to earn a BA and then head to graduate school. In the meantime, she is using her retail experience and love of art to help community artists.

So far, she has recruited over 50 artists through Facebook, Craigslist, and word of mouth. Some of the artists are friends and family members, as well as fellow students who are new to their creative fields or are veteran practicioners.

"Most artists are between the ages 20 and 24 or 40 and up. Some have been practicing their craft for years, and some are newer and very passionate about what they do," she said.

Their work ranges from photography and nature paintings to a "pong table," which Melendez explains, "is made by one artist who specializes in sports memorabilia. It's a long table that you line up cups on to play beer bong. Or you can play with non-alcoholic drinks."

Melendez is still seeking artists. Today she is hosting a "casting call where people are invited to come in with their artwork or their laptops to present their work."

She encourages all local artists to attend. "If your stuff is good, I won't turn you away," she promises. The gallery will open its doors for sales in early December.
