Police: Annapolis Man Beat His Mother with Hammer
The woman was hospitalized and remains in serious condition, according to police.
A Cape St. Claire man was arrested Tuesday for allegedly beating his mother with a hammer, police said.
Robert Benscoter, 33, was charged with attempted second-degree murder after he allegedly struck his 61-year-old mother with a hammer in the head and torso after an argument, according to a police release.
Anne Arundel County Police responded to the 1300 block of Hazel Nut Court in Cape St. Claire at 8:08 p.m. Tuesday for a report of family violence.
"The victim’s son apparently used a hammer to strike her repeatedly in the head and torso. In fear for her life, the victim fled her home and ran to a nearby neighbor, where she called the police," according to a release.
When police arrived, Benscoter had fled the home and led police on an extensive search involving K-9 and air units. He was reportedly found in a wooded area near Commanders Way.
Police said Benscoter was arrested without incident and charged with second-degree murder, first- and second-degree assault and reckless endangerment. The victim was transported to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where she is currently in serious but stable condition.

Hazel Nut Court is not in Cape St. Claire and the individuals involved are not residents of Cape St. Claire. We have faught this type of sloppy reporting with the Capital for years. Non-factual reporting like this does irreparable damage to the affected community and amounts to defamation of character. Please check your addresses along with all other facts in the future.

Close enough, and Cape already has "irreparable damage".
Lighten up....Louie.

Thanks for the comment. I did check the address, as I was unsure of where that was in Broadneck. But the house is in a community located off of Cape St. Claire Road. Are you saying Cape St. Claire's boundaries are further down the road? If so, where does it begin?

Wow. As the former editor of a neighborhood weekly, I would think that this sort of basic local knowledge would be a job requirement. Can't say that I've spent a great deal of time reading this AOL experiment and this only reinforces my decision not to do so.

Jim, I'm still new and learning the ins and outs of the Broadneck area. The divisions between the different communities is sometimes a very subtle thing, particularly for someone new to the area like me. I have asked around, but gotten different answers as to where Cape St. Claire begins or ends. Care to enlighten me?
