Balanced Effort Pushes Bruins Past Annapolis

Broadneck boys lacrosse returns to the win column with a 12-5 victory over Annapolis. The Lady Bruins were also victorious, topping the Panthers 19-12.

After forcing itself into needing a fourth-quarter comeback against Severna Park on Thursday, the Broadneck High boys lacrosse team wanted to make sure it played a complete game against Annapolis.

On Tuesday, the Bruins traveled to a damp Al Laramore Field and delivered a 12-5 triumph.

"After we lost to Severna Park our guys didn't sulk about it," Broadneck coach Clay White said.

The Bruins, who found themselves down 1-0 after one quarter of play, saw seven different players record goals, led by senior Mark Brashears with three.

Thirty-two seconds into the second quarter defender Cameron Rowe tied the game at one and his brother Colin Rowe gave Broadneck the lead only 16 seconds after that. The Bruins would never look back, as Brooks Wiggans would add two goals in the quarter, en route to a 6-1 halftime lead.

"We knew their goalie was going to be [an] all-star goalie," Cameron Rowe said. "We needed to change the plan on him. We did that in the second quarter and things fell from there."

Annapolis goalie Kevin Pastrana recorded 12 saves on the afternoon.

Antonio Mazzeo, who had a first-quarter goal waived off, assisted three goals in the second quarter and finished with four helpers.

Senior James Mullis got in on the action, netting the Bruins' seventh goal with a diving effort midway through the third quarter.

"I thought we shared the ball today," White said. "We shot the ball much more efficiently today."

The hosts showed they would not roll over, scoring three fourth-quarter goals to narrow the gap. Brashears, a big hulking attackman, wore down the Panther defense and dashed any thought of a late comeback. His final goal was picturesque of the afternoon. As Brashears whipped a shot at Pastrana, the shot was saved, but got away from the Panther goalie and trickle in. Broadneck would hold on for the 12-5 victory and place themselves back in the win column.

"We knew if we put together a total game that we could get this thing going again," Cameron Rowe said.

Lady Bruins Outshoot, Outlast Annapolis, 19-12.

Alli Dawson scored five goals and Paige Duncan added four scores for Broadneck High as the Lady Bruins defeated Annapolis, 19-12, in a shootout between two of the county's best girls squads.

The two teams went goal-for-goal to begin the game, as the score was tied 3-3 at the 17:43 mark. While the Lady Bruins attack can be dangerous, coach Karen Tengwall says that her team can be a bit passive in an attempt to get others involved.

"I called a timeout and told them we had to start attacking. [You] can't get open goals if you're not going to the goal," Tengwall said.

And go to goal the Bruins did. Sophomore Kacey Koolage scored her first of three goals at 16:26, to give the visitors a lead they would never relinquish.

Koolage's goal started a string of five straight scores for Broadneck, who led 8-5 at the half.

Broadneck would open the second half with another 5-0 streak, including two goals from Duncan. In a game that saw the rain continuously grow stronger and pour down on the players, the Lady Panthers were on the verge of being washed away.

A shot off the post by the Annapolis' Katie Govatos would then start an uproar by the Panthers.

"They played a full game, which was great, I give them credit for that," Tengwall said. "We tried a couple different defenses. They have a couple really quick players, so we decided to change it back to just playing on the eight. Trying not to let them in at all."

The Panthers' Lorianne Hoover would tally three times in the final 10 minutes, on her way to a team high five goals.

"I told them I am very proud of the way they respond under the adversity [and] continue [to] play hard when it would be pretty easy to pack it in and say, 'We're not going to win this one'," Annapolis coach David Gehrdes said about his team as it moves forward.

As much as the Lady Panthers refused to give up, Broadneck matched every little run. Back-to-back goals by Madeline Dion of Annapolis cut the lead to six with seven plus minutes to play, but sophomore Zoe Earnest and freshman Ellie McNulty would quickly stretch the Bruin lead back to eight.

Broadneck held strong and captured the 19-12 win, staying near the top of the county standings.

"We're going to work defensively," Gehrdes said. "Who wants to be in a shootout like that where it's 18-12 or 15-14? We need to shore up our defense a little bit."
