Students at Broadneck Elementary are learning about their green thumbs on Friday with a service project where they'll plant bulbs.

Faculty at BES are organizing a Learning Garden project to make a real-world connection for students between the practical aspects of planting and growing seeds, and the curriculum they follow in the classroom.

"We will also be using the garden as inspiration for activities in math, reading, and writing lessons," said Jed Kling, assistant principal at BES. "The ideas we have been generating are endless."

The ultimate goal of the project is to involve all students in planting, watering and harvesting plants. Data will be collected by students and they'll perform research along the way.

Students will also be selling their plants, flowers and vegetables in the future, with proceeds benefiting the school's Kindness Committee, which assists elementary school families in need, Kling said.

To kick off the project, students will be planting bulbs on Friday. Patch will be there to photograph the event, so stay tuned.
