The amplified metronome clicking throughout the day, the heavy beat of the drums and sounds of student musicians as they learn to listen to each other are heard throughout the area – a signal that band camp has begun at Broadneck High School.

Students began band camp last week, though they have been playing together throughout the summer, learning the music to their new marching show once a week, from June to August.

The first week of band camp, held last week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday through Friday, had the kids coming home hot, exhausted, and energized at the same time.

“We do have a lot of freshmen this year,” said senior Elena Murphy, who is sharing drum major responsibilities with senior Phillip Decker this season. “They have a lot to learn in a short amount of time. “

Luckily, many alumni band members are showing up throughout the day to lend a hand. Some are getting ready to head off to college, while others play a more regular role throughout the season.

Former BHS student musician Kelsey Price, a student at AACC, assists the “pit” team, student musicians who play keyboard and mallet instruments, as well as electronic sounds, a gong, and more.

“We all love to come back and feel the excitement of the new season,” said Price. “You get it in your blood and you can’t stay away.”

BHS Band Director Matt Heist is happy to have the help. He relies on alums like Chris Pinder, a former BHS drum major, to teach things like basic marching fundamentals.

This year’s marching show is titled “Solaris,” a testament to the power of the sun.

“I am really excited about this year’s show,” said an upbeat Heist at the end of the first week of camp. “We are doing things on the field we have never done before and we have brand new uniforms. It’s a very exciting year.”
