Kids Get Hands-On With Real Trucks This Weekend
Kids will get hands-on experience with trucks and tractors, and learn how the massive vehicles work.
Do you know a child that's fascinated by large trucks?
Then it's time to put their toys away. There's an event this weekend that will give them a chance to see real, huge trucks up close and personal.
The Touch a Truck fundraiser and food drive will be 9-11:30 a.m. on Saturday at Broadneck Park in Arnold. In case it rains, the event will be moved to Sunday.
The event, sponsored by the Friends of Broadneck Park and Broadneck Area Youth Sports, will raise funds for the park's playground and also collect food for My Brother's Pantry.
"Kids love big things that move," said Kara McGuirk-Allison, the event's organizer. "That's the basic idea behind this."
This weekend kids can get hands-on experience with trucks and tractors, and learn how the massive vehicles work. There will also be a toy fire truck raffle, supplied by Franklin's Toys of Severna Park.
Area agencies and businesses participating in the Touch a Truck event include:
- Cape St. Claire Volunteer Fire Dept.
- Anne Arundel County Recycling
- Goode Trash Removal
- Richard's Tree Care
- BGE
- Central Sod
- Carroll Bros. Mini Excavator and Dump Truck
- Chesapeake Charters School Bus
- City of Annapolis Trolley Bus
- Anne Arundel County Sheriff's Department
- 24/7 Collision Care
The cost is $10 for each family plus at least one nonperishable food item.

The Friends have hosted several events this year to raise funds for the park's playground. In April, they hosted a Kite Festival, and in September, they're planning a golf tournament at the Bay Hills Golf Course in Arnold.
The Anne Arundel County Department of Recreations and Parks have also set aside $35,000 for playground renovations in this year's budget.
