If you’re looking for the perfect edible holiday treat for the family, there’s still a small window of opportunity to snag one of the region’s best array of desserts.

Caroline’s Cakes in Arnold will be open from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Christmas Eve. But after that, all the delicious holiday desserts might be gone.

For this year’s holidays, owner Caroline Ragsdale Reutter and her chefs have baked up a delectable amount of unique designs for cupcakes and cakes. From mini-Santas to giant-sized Frosty the Snowman cakes, to yule tide log-cakes, there’s something for everyone.

Reutter received national attention this year when her most prized dessert – the seven-layer caramel cake—was featured in the 2011 film "The Help."

Reutter said she thinks what sets her work apart from others is that she makes everything from scratch with European butter cream instead of artificial ingredients like Crisco.

"It's just egg whites, oil and sugar, water and butter," Ragsdale said. "We're not using anything out of a bucket."

It’s been a busy holiday season, she said. Possibly the busiest she’s ever been. The publicity came fast and furious this year, and has made expanding her business a necessity. 

Caroline’s Cakes now takes up a good portion of the Jemal Shopping Center on Whitehall Road. One storefront is just for desserts, another is for deli and other goods, yet another is for organizing packages, and the largest wing of the shopping center is dedicated to shipping those packages across the country.

Altogether, Reutter said “tens of thousands” of her packages have been shipped out this year, with most of those being focused near the holiday season.

Organizing such an operation takes a toll on Reutter, but she said her staff and her customers help make it manageable.

"This is my happy place," Reutter said. "I think the community we're building here is one where you can walk next door and borrow a cup of sugar. That's what I think we represent, and I think people miss that. I know I miss it."

Caroline’s Cakes is located at 1580 Whitehall Rd., in the Jemal Shopping Center.
