Local Girl Scouts Have Busy Year

Troop 1832 completes a variety of service activities benefitting locals schools and nonprofits.

Submitted by Danielle M. Brown

This Friday, Girl Scout Junior Troop 1832 of service unit 644, lead by Danielle Brown and Kammy Curry, will bridge up to Cadettes at the Mariners Church. The troop, made up of 13 girls, most whom have been together since first grade, will graduate from both Cape St. Claire and Belvedere Elementary on June 14.

As a parting thank you to both schools, the troop created a stepping stone and planted a butterfly bush at Cape St. Claire, and supported Belvedere’s “Recycle-Thon” by making a monetary donation.

The girls were very busy over this past year with planning and implementing their Bronze Award. On Saturday, March 5, the troop hosted a “Fashion Day” event for 64 Brownies. They helped the Brownies earn their Fashion Try-it award. Stations included a fashion dress up, fashion history and make your own fashion magazine cover, jewelry making, fashion bingo, and a “decorate your own dress cookie.” The troop then celebrated the completion of their Bronze Award with an ice cream sundae party and sleepover.

As part of their community service project, the girls collected donations of toothpaste, toothbrushes, floss, lotion, shampoo, and other toiletries from local dentists and made 43 bags for the Anne Arundel County foster care program. The bags were given to Chris Poulsen and her staff to give to children placed in a new home until they could retrieve their own belongings. Each bag also contained a small note or picture to hopefully cheer up the child.

To round out their final year as Junior Girl Scouts, the girls used their hard-earned cookie money and went to Bethany Beach two weeks ago for some fun in the ocean and on the Rehoboth boardwalk. The troop completed their Cooking IP after food shopping, and then prepared all their own meals, as well as made birthday cards for patients when they are in the hospital on their birthday.

Next year, Girl Scouts USA will be celebrating 100 years and Girl Scouts of Central Maryland will be celebrating 50 years. To celebrate these milestones, Troop 1832 hopes to hold an event that includes all 39 troops in the service unit. They will be inviting every girl and leader to make a “quilt square” to celebrate Girl Scouting. Once completed, in February 2012, the troops, their families, and the community will be invited to an unveiling at the Broadneck Library.

Congratulations, Troop 1832!
