Girl Scout Troop 1832 showed off their quilting project, celebrating 100 years of Girl Scouts in the USA and 50 years in Maryland, at a gathering at the Broadneck Library on Monday night.

The quilt is the work of 220 girls in Girl Scout Service Unit 44. Each girl fashioned a square block for the quilt showing what they think about the Girl Scouts. The blocks featured campfires, roasting marshmallows, sleeping bags, soccer, friends, animals and much more.

"You have to look close at a lot of the stitching, because a lot of them have secret messages," said Danielle Brown, leader of Girl Scout Troop 1832. 

Troop 1832 includes students from Magothy River, Severn River Middle, and Cape St. Claire Elementary schools. Brown lined up her girls in front of the quilt that they spent eight months working on before the official unveiling and everyone gave them a round of applause. 

Roxann Ashworth, leader of Troop 2499, said she introduced the idea of quilting because she thought it would be a great way to celebrate the Girl Scouts' anniversary.

"They had planned to do paper quilt blocks to celebrate the anniversary, so I told Danielle her girls should probably learn how to do it with fabric, if they're going to bother with paper," Ashworth said.

Ashworth and her daughter, Naomi, spent days sewing together the blocks of the quilt before the unveiling. She said they were both proud of the final product and the work of all the girls involved.

The quilt will be on display at the Broadneck Library throughout March, before it is transported to the Girl Scouts of Central Maryland archives in Howard County.
