PHOTOS: Students Lose Shoes for Drunk Driving Display

Dozens of shoes were scattered across the steps of the ampitheater on Anne Arundel Community College's campus this week as part of an awareness campaign for substance abuse.

The campaign was sponsored by the Substance Abuse Education Office and a student club called Boosting Alcohol Consciousness Concerning the Health of University Students (BACCHUS).

A chalk outline of a person was drawn on the floor of the ampitheater. In the center of the outline was written: "Over 30,000 students need emergency healthcare each year as a result of alcohol overdose."

The display was organized by Loretta Lawson-Munsey, AACC employee and staff coordinator for BACCHUS. She said she's been doing similar awareness campaigns for years, but this one has proven to be particularly powerful.

"I'm not from the school of thought that fear prevention is the best, but it is very powerful," she said. "Without a budget, I had to think of an idea that would leave a lasting impression."

The shoes were donated to the club from several organizations, incuding the Salvation Army, Goodwill, and local shops, Lawson-Munsey said.
