POLL: Are the Replacement Refs Hurting Your Team?
Patch wants to know what you think of the NFL’s replacement referees' performance so far this season.
Whether your team is 2-0, 0-2 or an even 1-1, you all have probably been talking about one common factor: the replacement referees.
Since the NFL locked out the referees over a labor dispute this offseason, so-called replacement refs have been filling in and causing a lot of controversy.
Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall told the Washington Post he would pitch in some cash to have the real refs back after he said the officials missed a myriad of calls in the Skins—Rams Sunday matchup.
“I don’t know what they’re arguing about,” Hall told the Post regarding the dispute between the league and its regular officials. “Whatever, I’ve got a couple mil on it, so let’s try to make it work. I’m sure this locker room can pile up some cash and try to help the cause out.”
Ravens fans also got a taste of the replacement refs confusion in their matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles Sunday afternoon.
The game between Baltimore and Philadelphia got very chippy very quickly and it seemed as though the officials could do little to enforce discipline and gain control of the game.
A couple of offsetting personal foul calls didn’t do much to silence the brewing tempers of the players on the field.
Fans also complained of a few blown calls in the game, specifically a pass interference call that they said could have cost the Ravens the game.
Jamison Hensley, who covers the AFC North for ESPN, wrote the following about Sunday’s Ravens—Eagles matchup.
“The most debated call was the offensive pass interference penalty on Ravens wide receiver Jacoby Jones on a touchdown catch that would've put Baltimore ahead, 27-17, with 5:29 remaining. If anything, it looked like defensive pass interference on Nnamdi Asomugha, who never turned to face the ball. It only made matters worse when the official didn't throw a flag. He mistakenly tossed out his blue beanie.”
Whether you think the NFL is right to lockout the real referees, you think the replacement refs are hurting the game, or you just think everyone should stop whining and play football—you probably have an opinion, and Patch wants to know what is it.
