Scooter Wreck Hospitalizes Teens in Cape St. Claire

An eyewitness said two boys were not wearing helmets before the wreck.

Two teenagers in Cape St. Claire were hospitalized after they flipped a scooter on Latrobe Drive Friday morning.

An unidentified 17-year-old male was taken by emergency personnel to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center at about 10:30 a.m., according to Anne Arundel County Fire Department spokesman Lt. Keith Hamilton. Another male, age not given, was taken to Anne Arundel Medical Center with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Cape resident Elizabeth Berry Williams wrote on Facebook that the incident occurred in front of her house on Latrobe Drive. She said she saw two boys riding a scooter without helmets flip their vehicle.

"Please pray for them, and please parents, insist that your children wear helmets," Williams wrote.

Hamilton said he was not on scene for the incident and could not comment on the specifics of it.

A new state law that goes into effect on Oct. 1 requires all motor scooters and mopeds to be titled and insured, and all operators and passengers to wear a helmet and eye protection.
