Students, Teachers Define Broadneck's Fashion

The video was posted on YouTube by a student, and features interviews with several fashion-saavy personalities.

A group of students and faculty at Broadneck High School talked on video about what they think the fashion of Broadneck is. The video was posted on YouTube by a student, and features interviews with several fashion-saavy personalities, all set to the tunes of the British indie band The XX. So, what are some of the recurring themes for what defines Broadneck's fashions in the winter? Boots, scarves, sweatshirts, yoga pants and of course UGGs. Fashion is an elective curriculum available at Broadneck High School through its art department.  The Capital Gazette wrote an article on the impact of this relatively new curriculum on Anne Arundel County schools.

Bay Blues Festival Returns to Sandy Point in 2013

The 2013 festival will be held May 18-19 at Sandy Point State Park.

After some consideration, the operators of the Chesapeake Bay Blues Festival have decided to bring the all-star concert back to Broadneck this year. After last year's concert, the event's organizer Don Hooker said he was considering other venues. But recently, the official festival website was updated with good news: The show will be back at the same venue this year. "It really is the best place in the world for a Blues Festival," Hooker said on the website. The 2013 festival will be held on May 18-19 at Sandy Point State Park. In May, the 15th annual Bay Blues Festival helped raise $30,000 for local charities, but that amount was considered "disappointing," according to a press release issued after the event. Other venues were being …

VIDEO: Severn River Orchestra Tours Broadneck Schools

The tour showed elementary students the kind of music program they'll have access to in middle school.

Arnold Elementary's gymnasium boomed with brass and strings on Friday morning to the tunes of Katy Perry's "Fireworks." Severn River Middle School's chamber orchestra was on tour Friday across several Broadneck schools, starting with Arnold Elementary, and then on to Belvedere Elementary and Windsor Farm Elementary. Music director Mike Tayman told 5th grade students about the orchestra's trips this year across the county—from FutureCare to play for senior citizens, and to the Marley Station Mall to play for an even larger audience. They'll also be taking a trip to Busch Gardens in Williamsburg in the future. Tayman encouraged younger musicians to keep at it, as it only gets better. "What you find in music is that if you keep playing, …

The Edible Canvas of Holiday Cookies

A look at a fun and time-honored tradition of decorating holiday cookies for family gatherings or holiday parties.

One of my favorite childhood holiday traditions decorating cookies; the possibilities were endless. In the world of holiday cookies, you could have a purple reindeer with an orange Reese's Piece nose to guide Santa's sleigh. You could have a blue Christmas tree with red hots and chocolate chips for lights. In the imaginative world of the holiday cookie, anything is possible. Here are some to remember when decorating holiday cookies either at a party with friends or at home with family. If you choose to decorate your cookies before baking them, use decorations that are able to withstand the heat of baking. This includes nuts, dried fruits, colored/natural sugars and sprinkles.  If you choose to decorate your cookies after baking them, first…
