Arnold Elementary Parents, Students Say New School Long Overdue

The school was built in 1967, and since then has not received any major overhauls.

A group of parents with students at Arnold Elementary School have attended the past two county budget hearings asking for planning funding, which could lead to the construction of a replacement school. The group addressed the Anne Arundel County Council twice during public hearings on the county budget this month, asking for approval of a $2.23 million feasibility study at the school—the first step in any construction project at the school system. The study would help to determine the scale of construction that needs to be done at the school, whether it should be replaced or merely patched. Meet the New County Executive at AACC This Month

Anne Arundel County Executive Laura Neuman is scheduled to speak at Anne Arundel Community College in a joint event hosted by several local citizens groups. Local residents are invited to attend a speech by Neuman at AACC on May 22 in Arnold where the executive will lay out her priorities for the next fiscal year. Neuman will also host a question and answer session after her presentation. The event is being hosted by the Broadneck Council of Communities, the Arnold Preservation Council and the Greater Severna Park Council, and will take place at 7 p.m. May 22 in the Florestano Building lecture hall at AACC's Arnold campus. State Comptroller Tastes, Approves of Cakes & Confections

The bakery's owners were presented with a certificate from the comptroller for their customer service and excellent business.

Maryland State Comptroller Peter Franchot paid a visit to a popular local bakery this week on the recommendation of Broadneck's councilman and found a treat to his liking. Franchot arrived in the St. Margaret's area of Broadneck along with Anne Arundel County Councilman Dick Ladd at Cakes & Confections this week to recognize Mike and Julianne Brown, owners of the gourmet bakery. The owners were awarded with a certificate for "their excellent bakery and customer service, and their commitment to their customers." Ladd said it is one of his favorite bakeries and couldn't resist convincing Franchot to take home a berry pie, the councilman's favorite. What's your favorite treat at Cakes & Confections?

Police Chief Announces 'Voluntary' Resignation, Says Unrelated to Department Investigation

Anne Arundel County Police Chief Larry Tolliver announced his resignation Tuesday afternoon, in a letter that says the decision was not "stimulated" by negative claims about the department.

After a stretch of less than nine months heading police in Anne Arundel County, Chief Larry Tolliver announced his resignation Tuesday afternoon, as the county awaits the outcome of an investigation into claims of unfair treatment within the department. "I am resigning today because the department needs a chief who can focus solely on the department’s mission, something that is challenging to do in the current environment," Tolliver said in the letter. Tolliver's resignation is effective May 21. Patch contacted the office of County Executive Laura Neuman for information about possible replacements, but she has yet to respond.
