AHOY: Pirate Ship Playground Nears Completion

The new playground equipment should be ready by the end of the month.

Swing by Broadneck Park and you can see the pieces of the new pirate-ship themed playground being assembled.

Construction at the park began last month, starting with the demolition of the old playground. A month later, the work is nearly complete and the masts of the pirate ship are flying high.

The playground at the park is being rebuilt with newer, safer equipment, following a fundraising movement led by a Broadneck mom.

Kara McGuirk-Allison's fundraising efforts through the Friends of Broadneck Park began late in 2011, after seeing playground equipment go unfixed.

The campaign came to a close in 2012, shortly after Anne Arundel County Department of Recreation and Parks gave the green light on the renovation project.

The original park playground was built in 1990, and McGuirk-Allison said most playground equipment lasts 15 years. While Broadneck's equipment was in relatively good condition, park officials agreed a replacement would be beneficial.

The playground should be completed by the middle of September, park officials said.
