Arnold Senior Center Hosts Virtual Dementia Tours

A dementia simulation tour will begin in February, designed to assist anyone in understanding the condition.

Learn what it's like to be one of the 5 million Americans suffering from Alzheimer's disease at a virtual tour hosted by the Arnold Senior Center in February.

To help family caregivers understand the physical and mental challenges of those with dementia, the National Family Caregiver Support Program at the Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities has scheduled two free Virtual Dementia Tours in February. 

The tour is designed to build sensitivity and awareness in those caring for people suffering from dementia, according to a release. It is a dementia simulation tool created to assist anyone in understanding the condition.

There are approximately 35 million Americans age 65 and older, and more than 5.4 million suffer from Alzheimer’s disease, according to the Anne Arundel County   Department of Aging. Dementia is the overriding diagnosis for cognitive impairments—the largest category under dementia is Alzheimer’s.

The tours will be given on Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Arnold Senior Center. Reservations can be made now for the 10 a.m. to noon or 1-3 p.m. sessions. Online and telephone registration for the event begins January 25 and space is limited.

The VDT will be facilitated by Mary Chaput of the county Department of Aging and Disabilities, and Mary Fridley, registered nurse and founder of Gero-Resources, LLC.
