Better Sex in a Clean Car? Car Wash Sign Offends Some

Tell us what you think: Is the "dirty" saying on the sign clever or offensive?

The Great American Car Wash is known for its catchy signs that grab the attention of passersby on busy Ritchie Highway in Severna Park.

Yet, some say the car wash should “keep it clean” and avoid dirty sayings such as the one currently on display: “Have Better Sex in a Clean Car.”

The photo of the sign was posted on Patch community boards with the comments: "We were disgusted by their marquee sign out front. Needless to say we won't be doing business there any longer. How inappropriate!" So, we asked Severna Park Patch readers on Facebook what they thought of the sign.

“I’m going to get my car cleaned!” was Paul Rice's response.

“I saw it this morning,” wrote Mary Winstanley Brown. “OMG are they for real. So many children in cars driving by.... This is very wrong.”

Lisa Quesinberry Allen wrote, “It doesn't offend me, but I don't find it funny either. I don't really get it. How is a cleaner car going to improve your sex in it? Dumb. Mildly inappropriate.”

“It seems with signs like that, in a week or so, that message will be gone and some other random message will be up there,” wrote Laurie Taylor. “So why get all uptight about it, when they will probably take it down before a lot of people even see it.”

“As a parent, and as a teacher, I am disgusted that this is in a public place where families drive by everyday,” wrote Hayley Falk Meyer. “How are we ever to teach our children what is appropriate and what is not, when the adults in our midst promulgate such trash! Yes, it is a free country, and there is free speech, but when are people going to realize that we are all role models to our children?”

“I love their signs. Last week it said ‘Don't get caught riding dirty,’” wrote Kait Claiborne. “Get over it people; there's way worse things in the shows you let your kids watch on TV.”

Ron Lambert Jr. wrote, “Nobody has a sense of humor anymore. I saw it last night. Thought it was funny as hell!”

“They've accomplished their marketing objectives. You all are talking about it. How many of you will not patronize them because of the sign?” wrote Doreen Vavrek.
