Broadneck Teen Jobs, Part 2: Rita's in the Cape

A popular spot for Broadneck residents, this tasty treat business provides local teens with the ultimate summer job.

Rita's, this modern day frozen treat provider, is the hotspot for kids and adults in the Broadneck area, especially during these warm summer months.

People flock to it after sporting events or after a long day on the water and buy their product in bulk for parties and get-togethers. The is a local sensation, with nationwide connections, and an optimum location for a teen summer job.

The Rita’s corporation, after its inception in Bensalem, Pa., has spread throughout the United States like wildfire, engulfing much of the East Coast and along the Gulf of Mexico.

The minimum age requirement to work at Rita’s is 14. Part-time jobs are generally available for 14-, 15- or 16-year-olds, but given the popularity of the business, getting a job here is competitive.

Francesca Gargano, Broadneck teen and Rita’s employee, has been working at the Cape St. Claire Rita’s since June, three days each week.

“The work is extremely laid-back, too” she says. “We mop the floors and tend to the customers, but when we are not as busy, we get to enjoy the air conditioning and talk.”

Ever wonder how the flavors of the day are chosen? She later explained how the Rita’s system works. Managers who pick and make each flavor generally choose ones that sell well, like chocolate or mango, over lesser-appreciated flavors like banana or island fusion.

Gargano also explained how managers try to keep the staff safe, doing things like having the older staff members take out the trash late at night and ensuring that an adult or older teen is there to close up shop before the end of a work day.

“The best part of this job is that I get to see my friends every day,” said Gargano about the work. “I see people from school or my neighborhood, and its just fun.”
