Cape St. Claire Improvement Association Leader Comments on 'The Pit'

The association's president praised recent actions by citizens in finding solutions to the area's problems.

Scott Dembowski, the president of the Cape St. Claire Improvement Association, issued the following statement after the repeated incidents in an area commonly referred to as "The Pit" behind Broadneck High School.

"We are very pleased at the recent increase in police patrols of the area known as “The Pit” behind Broadneck High School. It is unfortunate that recent events have prompted this kind of action, but the problem has persisted for too long. We can no longer turn a blind eye to the fights, underage smoking, littering and alleged drug use and sales happening in that area. A recent arrest by county police highlights the need for persistence in monitoring this area. Police recovered drugs, drug paraphernalia and more than half a dozen edged weapons from a 23 year old male, and several juveniles in a car parked in that area.

"County Police have made arrests or issued citations on February 8th, 12th and 26th of this year. CSCIA appreciates the enforcement efforts of the police, the cooperation of Broadneck High School and the outstanding work of CSCIA board member Beau Breeden in working to find long term solutions to the problems caused by the actions of a few. It is noteworthy that most arrests and citations issued by police did not involve Cape residents.

"I encourage everyone to continue reporting suspicious activity to the police, and for activity that you may feel is simply noteworthy, but perhaps not worth calling the police, please send an email detailing what you’ve seen to CSCIA’s security committee at security@cscia.org. The committee collects information on problems in the neighborhood works with local police to resolve these issues."
