Cape UMC Kicks Off a Busy Spring

Yesterday's spring bazaar was just the first of many upcoming activities planned this month.

Despite the chilly weather, plenty of locals stopped by Cape St. Claire’s United Methodist Church spring bazaar, hoping for a good deal for a good cause.

“I told everyone we would be here despite gloomy or rainy weather,” said a determined and always cheerful Lys Cockrell, pastor of the church. Proceeds were going toward the church’s ministries.

The community event was the first of many planned in anticipation of Easter Week.

A live drama, including music, for a Maundy Thursday observance of the Last Supper, is being held this year at the church at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 21. Immediately following the service, there will be a prayer vigil that will continue throughout the night and the next day, until their Black Friday service on Friday, April 22, at 7:30 p.m.

“I will also be planning meditative walks for the day,” Cockrell said.

At noon on that Black Friday, local churches will join together in a Cross Walk, carrying a wooden cross through the streets of Cape St. Claire, starting at Broadneck Baptist Church and traveling to Christ Our Anchor Presbyterian. All are invited to join in the observance.

On Easter morning, there will  be a community sunrise service on the beach area of the Cape St. Claire park.

Cape UMC is also having an Easter service at the church that morning at 9 a.m.

But that is not an end to the celebration of their Resurrection season, said Pastor Cockrell. The church will also have a concert on Sunday, May 1, with special music led by chorus member Mae Johnson.
