Down by the Bay

Water lovers enjoyed the holiday weekend and are already enjoying the Broadneck peninsula's many offerings of the season.

While the Blue Angels did not give us reason to gather on the water this year, Broadneck seafarers still took to the water en mass over Memorial Day weekend. Sailboats, kayaks, skiffs, and dinghies flooded the tributaries of the Severn and Magothy River.

Water temperatures are hovering around 75 degrees, and we have seen no signs of sea nettles or jellyfish. (They will surely appear midsummer.) Upon driving through Cape St. Claire on Monday, I noticed many families enjoying the view, the water, and the playgrounds at Cape beach.

On the opposite side of the peninsula, the fishing pier at Jonas Green State Park was filled with eager anglers, hoping to reel in a keeper. Up the street, overlooking the Severn, both locals and the influx of tourists brought on by the USNA Commencement Week visited the World War II Memorial.

At Sandy Point beach, guests swam, fished, and boated in the shadow of the bridge. The lack of rain that we have experienced over the past few weeks has kept runoff and drain water to minimum, so water clarity levels are relatively high. This is the best time of year to enjoy the water because the temperature is still refreshing and free from stinging creatures.

While the heat prevailed onshore, a brisk southerly wind cooled down temperatures on the water and made for ideal sailing conditions with most cruisers utilizing a full sail plan. Competitive sailors enjoyed several events last weekend, including a traditional boat regatta off of Greenbury Point, the Miles River Race, and the Down the Bay Race.

Sailing events like these ensure a fun filled weekend for their competitors and also lend a sublime grace to all waterfront views by dotting the horizon with beautiful white sails. These views are a signature feature of our area in the summer.

For outstanding swimming on a life guarded beach, visit Sandy Point State Park, where unparalleled views of the Bay Bridge and Sandy Point Lighthouse punctuate the idyllic setting. Boaters can also use the boat ramps and trailer parking available at the park. Kayakers, jet skiers, and sailors alike all prefer the beautifully maintained ramps inside the park. Their orientation on a protected lake with a channel leading to the open bay, creates the perfect setting for a safe easy launch. To avoid the crowds go on a weekday and remember to bring your own snacks because there are no concessions in the park. (http://www.dnr.state.md.us/publiclands/southern/sandypoint.asp)

We are expecting another spectacular weekend with temperatures in the upper 80’s and only a slight chance of thunderstorms (and let’s face it, that’s what the forecast will be until October) so get out of the house and embrace the Bay! The best spots to get onto the water are right in our community.

See you on the water!
