Fitness for the Body and Soul

Local program offers holistic fitness that strengthens women both physically and spiritually.

As the men’s basketball players left the gym of Broadneck Evangelical Church on Saturday morning, women of all ages were arriving, water bottles and rolled mats in hand ready to start the day on a positive note.

The ladies are participants in the new Body and Soul fitness class, led by Jacquelyn Mitchell, longtime participant of the Body and Soul program. Mitchell moved from Silver Spring to Annapolis a few years ago and wanted to start up a new program in the area. Broadneck Evangelical Presbyterian was available on Saturday mornings so the program there started last fall.

“Ok, ladies, let’s go over the routine,” said an enthusiastic Mitchell once everyone stretched and prepared to begin.

The class is for all age and fitness levels and allows participants to progress at a pace that works for them, using cardio and strength exercises.

“I put off fitness while working full time,” explained one participant on why she joined the program. “Now that I am older and have osteoporosis, I know it is time to work on taking care of myself.”

Another participant liked the fact that everyone who was in the class was different. “We have all ages and sizes. This way you don’t feel so intimidated.”

For some, the reasonable price was also a factor in taking the course.

The Body and Soul program has been in existence for thirty years, with classes all over the U.S. and around the world. Mitchell believes its emphasis on not only the physical but also on the spiritual health of participants sets it apart from the average fitness program.

“We work out to Christian-based music which really inspires us,” said Mitchell. “And after we are done, we talk about who needs prayers from the rest of us.”

The Arnold class meets Saturday mornings at 9 a.m. To inquire about joining, contact Mitchell at jackmitche3@aol.com or at 410-280-8914. She invites prospective participants to come join the class next Saturday to see if the program will work for them.

If you can’t make the Arnold class, Body and Soul classes are also offered in Annapolis, Edgewater, Severna Park, Severn and Glen Burnie. Go to www.bodyandsoul.org for locations and more information.
