Get Out: Weekend of June 11-12

It's June in Broadneck and time for the Strawberry Festival and more!

When/Where: A parade from the shopping center up Cape St. Claire Road to the beach begins at 10:00 a.m. The event is scheduled for Saturday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. (though rain date is Sunday).

Why Go: This is certainly the biggest annual event in Cape St. Claire. The day features live music, food, games, activities, vendors and various contests. If you live in the area, it is not to be missed.

Price: Free admission.

2) Every Step Counts at AACC

When/Where: Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to noon on the Anne Arundel Community College Arnold campus. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m.; walk/bike begins at 9:30 a.m.

Why Go: This event is a walk- or bike-a-thon to benefit Bello Machre, an organization that enriches the lives of people with developmental disabilities.  Music, face painting, clowns, prizes, rock climbing wall, food and more are offered at this event.

Price: Pledges and donations accepted.

3) Great Chesapeake Bay Swim

When/Where: The race starts Sunday morning from the shores of Sandy Point State Park. The course extends eastward between the two spans of the William Preston Lane Jr. Memorial Bridge (U.S. Highway 50) and finishes at a small sandy beach on Kent Island immediately south of the Bridge eastern-shore causeway, adjacent to the old Hemingway's Restaurant.

Why Go: The race is limited to 600 swimmers and registration is closed, but it is a marvelous sight from any perspective. The event’s proceeds goes to the March of Dimes.

*Reminder: Boat traffic will be closed in this area on Sunday morning.

4) Magothy River Day 

When/Where: On Sunday, boaters are encouraged to gather at the Dobbins Island Anchorage around noon.

Why Go: Magothy River Day 2011 is a celebration of the discovery of the Magothy River 403 years ago by Captain John Smith. At 1 p.m., the Nautical Wheelers, a Jimmy Buffett cover band, will play an on-water concert lasting until 5 p.m.

Price: Free.

5)  Charming Chamber Music at St. Margaret's

When/Where: Sunday at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, 4 p.m.

Why Go: This concert in the chamber series features flutist Kimberly Valerio, principal flutist with the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra since 1998 who has also performed with the Saint Louis Symphony and Baltimore Symphony, among others. She will be accompanied by St. Margaret’s own music director, James R. Fitzpatrick. 

Free: Donations for the church accepted.
