Heat Advisory, Air Quality Alert in Effect for County

It's going to be another hot one.

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory through 8 p.m. today for central Maryland.

During a heat advisory, children, pets and older adults are especially at risk of heat-related illnesses, said the National Weather Service (NWS). 

Temperatures will be in the mid-90s today, according to the NWS report, but the heat index, which takes humidity into account, will make it feel like 100. Temperatures inside vehicles could translate to 130 degrees, so the report cautions against leaving pets or children in cars.

Officials recommend drinking fluids and taking breaks in the shade or in air-conditioned spaces if you’re spending time outside.

The Maryland Department of the Environment issued an air quality alert on Monday for Anne Arundel, Howard, Baltimore, Harford and Carroll Counties.

“Air pollution concentrations … may become unhealthy for children; people with asthma, lung disease or heart disease; and the elderly,” according to the NWS. As a result, officials recommend that these individuals avoid exercise or strenuous outside activities.
