PHOTOS: Kites Fill Skies at Broadneck Park

Dozens of kites filled a cloudless sky on Sunday in Broadneck Park.

Kite-fliers turned out in droves Sunday afternoon for the second annual Broadneck Kite Festival at Broadneck Park.

Dozens of kites—of all shapes and sizes—filled the skies at the park, despite some inconsistent gusts that kept heavier kites grounded. That didn't stop some ambitious kite-fliers from sailing their kites more than 1,000 feet in the air in one extreme case.

Kites depicting animals and insects were popular, as were kites with themed shapes like Star Wars ships.

The event was hosted at the park by the Friends of Broadneck Park, headed by Kara McGuirk-Allison, a Broadneck mom who successfully led a fundraiser in 2012 to renovate the park's playground.

This year's event wasn't a fundraiser—it was just for fun, McGuirk-Allison said, adding that she was excited by the large turnout. She estimated the crowd Sunday to be about four to five times the amount of people from last year's festival.
