Does reading about local drama online ever remind you of the "Real Housewives" shows?
A Facebook joke about the drama that goes on in Cape St. Claire turned into a phenomenon when a resident turned the parody into a T-shirt.
John Bloh, a member of the "I Live in Cape St. Claire" Facebook group, said someone made a comment about two women who were seen fighting in the street—"Sounds like the Real Housewives of Cape St. Claire," Bloh recalled.
Bloh thought that sounded like a fun shirt, so he asked if anyone was interested in buying a few, planning on selling maybe a dozen of the novelty shirts. But the idea took off. A local company named Hank’s Corner LLC helped Bloh screen the images onto a shirt.
Now, Bloh is preparing nearly 60 of the shirts.
“I was amazed at the reaction,” Bloh said. “It snowballed and more and more people are seeing it now. It has taken on a life of its own. It's definitely more than I bargained for, but it's been fun.”
The shirt's design features art from a drawing of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Bloh said he found online. When the question of copyright was brought up, Bloh tracked down the original artist, who lives in Arlington, VA. The artist allowed Bloh to use his drawing, so long as he could get three of the shirts.
But are women in Cape St. Claire really like the women on TV?
“No, they don’t mean it literally,” Bloh said. “Cape St. Claire is like a really great, small town. It’s got everything you'd want. And this just connects them somehow, I guess.”
