A county councilman wants to make English the official language of Anne Arundel County, saying voters asked him for this. Councilman Jerry Walker (R-7th District) said illegal immigration is a hot topic among his constituents. The bill he presented to the council on Monday was in part the realization of a campaign promise, he said.

Police escorted a physical education teacher away from  on Thursday based on a community concern, school officials said. Jon "Tony" Prunesti was not arrested and was not charged with a crime, according to school system spokesperson Maneka Monk. Both police and school officials were vague on exactly what led officers to escort Prunesti from the school, saying they couldn't comment on the specifics.

One-third of the 15 teachers named as semifinalists for this year's Teacher of the Year award are from Broadneck-area schools. The winner will be chosen later this month, and all teachers will be recognized at a banquet in April.

Broadneck officials aren't happy with a new legislative redistricting map, but it's unlikely a change can be made. The two citizens' groups that oversee planning and growth in Broadneck met last week at a joint meeting to look into the past year, and ahead into what's coming in 2012.

According to Jack and Barbara Hogsten, Feb. 14 is just another day to say "I love you." These longtime Arnold community fixtures will share their 59th Valentine’s Day together this year, but Jack said he tries to make every day special—not just Feb. 14.
