Brandt Dunn Wears Many Musical Hats

Music is a priority to former Cape resident Brandt Dunn; whether he is helping kids in his job at Kennedy Krieger Institute, playing gigs with his band Hound, or working on his upcoming album.

For Brandt Dunn, it has always been about the music.

Since his teenage years in Cape St. Claire, playing cover music has paid the bills. He and friends Jon Gosnell, Mike Kirby, Bryan Jones and Dave Durst, have been performing together, solo, and with other bands for years.

Today, Dunn mostly plays accoustic gigs under the name “Hound,” sometimes solo, and sometimes with Gosnell.

To say that Dunn is busy would be an understatement. The former Cape St. Claire resident currently lives in Canton, and has regular gigs at Riptide by the Bay in Fells Point, as well as in Cape at .

Not only is he looking to play more gigs in the Delmarva area, but he is working on a band, album, and live show, which should be ready next year. He is also on the lookout to add a female singer who can play an instrument, one who can "keep the voices, creativity and energy balanced."

Dunn describes himself as a “rocker at heart.” He has been writing original material for 25 years, and his original songs, which can be heard on Reverbnation.com, have “evolved” past the point of embracing a popular genre, and are reflective of the many musical influences he has had, past and present.

This is also evident when Hound plays live; their set list covers everything from Ben Harper to The Black Keys to Brittney Spears.

Since 2009, he has had another gig. Unlike many musicians, Dunn's “day job” incorporates his passion for music as well. He works at Kennedy Krieger Institute as an assistant teacher in a rehabilitation program for children who have had traumatic brain injuries, and music plays a big role in his day-to-day interactions with the kids.

"I am an assistant teacher, but I also am their counselor, physical and speech therapist, nurse, friend, and clown when I get to run music group," explained Dunn. "I try to keep them laughing all day, really."
