Calling All Young Artists!

Children's Theatre of Annapolis announces audition dates for upcoming spring musical.

With the winter production now a fond memory, the Children's Theatre of Annapolis is busily preparing for their next production, and auditions are right around the corner. The next production will be "Night at the Wax Museum," a musical based on the popular motion picture coming up in mid-April.

Described as "when the hysterical meets the historical," the play will provide plenty of opportunities for young students to shine. The show will be directed by Jason Kimmel and Jose de la Mar with music direction by CTA alum Andrew Lincoln.

Auditions are specifically for children ages 8-14, a younger set than the recent "Once Upon a Mattress" production that featured mostly high school students.

"We generally allow our calendar to work with Broadneck High School's musical production," explained CTA producer Martha Gardner. "Our winter production insures that students who want to do both don't have to choose."

The BHS musical productions are usually held in March, with many CTA involved students participating. (Currently, BHS students are heavily involved in rehearsals for their "West Side Story" show to be held in March.)

The upcoming CTA auditions will be held on Saturday, January 29, from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m., and Sunday, January 30, from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. If needed, call backs will be held on Monday, January 31, 6 p.m. - 8 p.m.

All auditioners will be asked to sing, dance, and read and they should bring sheet music or a music-only cd. An accompanist will be provided. Auditioners should wear shoes that are appropriate for dancing and bring a recent picture to attach to your audition form.

It is important to note that to participate, the auditioner needs to be a member of CTA. Individual ($10) and Family ($20) memberships can be paid at the time of the audition.

The CTA offers the following guidance for those hoping to audition for the show:

  • Be on time;
  • Review the rehearsal and performance times and check that you can commit to all dates;
  • Complete membership forms;
  • Wait quietly until called to audition;
  • Listen carefully for announcements and directions;
  • Discuss your music with the Accompanist so that you are comfortable;
  • Don’t be afraid to ask to start over if you run into problems;
  • Complete all required parts of the audition, even if you don’t feel that you are good in one of them; and
  • No chewing gum.

CTA Board member Cathy Hollerbach said a good attitude is half the battle. "The key to a good audition is being prepared and having a smile on your face. It is important to know your song and to choose a song that is good for you (in your range, a song you like) and to know the words," she advised. "Having a positive attitude, and lots of energy and enthusiasm is essential. At this age, they are not necessarily looking for a whole lot of experience, just a person who is willing to learn and work hard and who has some talent that the director can bring out in the show."
