Get Out: Music and Drama Abound

Local residents are fortunate to have many cultural offerings on the peninsula this weekend.

For the weekend of March 10-12

1)  Broadneck High School presents West Side Story

When/Where:  Thursday and Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the auditorium of Broadneck High School.

Why Go:  Lights, music and lots of action will hit the stage at Broadneck High School this weekend for the school’s production of West Side Story. The musical, set in the heart of Manhattan in the 1950s, features the story of Romeo and Juliet with an American twist. A live pit orchestra and the sensational talents of local students are sure to be a hit.

Price:  $10 for adults; $8 for students and seniors.

2)  St. Patrick’s Day Celebration at St. Andrew’s

When/Where:  Saturday from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m., St. Andrew by the Bay Catholic Church, 701 East College Parkway.

Why Go: This holiday celebration, sponsored by the Broadneck Knights of Columbus, benefits the Saint Andrew by the Bay Pre-School and other charities. The event includes a traditional corned beef and cabbage dinner, Harp and Bud on tap, wine, soft drinks, set-ups and a dessert buffet. Music will be provided by "Digital DJ" featuring traditional Irish music, raffles, 50/50s, door prizes and a Walt's Irish Coffee Bar at $5 per cup will also be available.

3)  Concert by the Rob Levit Trio

When/Where:  Friday, 8 p.m., Humanities Building Room 112, Anne Arundel Community College.

Why Go: Levit is a critically-acclaimed Annapolis musician, artist, author and educator. The group is renowned for its jazz renditions and improvisations. The concert is sponsored by the AACC Cultural Events Committee.

4)  AACC presents The Vagina Monologues

When/Where:  Saturday, 7 p.m., Pascal Center for the Performing Arts on the Anne Arundel Community College campus. 

Why Go:  Students and faculty members present this highly acclaimed drama, in honor of V-Day, a global movement to end violence against women and girls.

5)  Songs and Spirituals with Kisma Jordan, Soprano

When/Where:  Sunday, 4 p.m., St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, 1601 Pleasant Plains Road.

Why Go:  Soprano Kisma Jordan is at home on the opera stage as well as in concert and in a recital. New York Times music critic Anthony Tommasini hails her "shimmering soprano voice." Catch her stunning delivery of spirituals, art songs and arias in this concert sponsored by St. Margaret’s.

Price:  Free, donations appreciated.
