Green Lawn Care a Focus for ASDC Outdoor Services

Lawn care doesn't have to be bad for the environment, says Arnold resident Art Ditzel, owner of ASDC Outdoor Services.

Growing up in Mago Vista and Bay Hills, Art Ditzel always loved the outdoors, so much so that he went into the landscaping business, working for companies in the local area.

But sometimes caring about the environment and lawn care maintenance don’t go hand in hand. So, Ditzel made a choice.

This spring, Ditzel, with the support of his wife Shannon, created his own lawn maintenance and care business named ASDC Outdoor Services with an important emphasis on going green.

“My family has chosen to try and support a more self-sustaining lifestyle and we are very committed to organic alternatives,” said Ditzel. “We want to help others do the same.”

ASDC offers the same kind of lawn care as other businesses, like mowing, fertilizing, mulching, and patio and pond care. But they also offer organic alternatives to the pesticides and other chemicals usually used for treatment.

“An example is our seven step organic fertilization treatment,” explained Ditzel. “Instead of dangerous chemicals, we use corn gluten. It is about 90% as effective, but it is very child and pet friendly.”

Other examples include his mosquito spray treatment that consists of a mixture of oil, pepper, and garlic. “It is great for something like a herb garden,” said Ditzel. “It is also deer and raccoon resistant.”

Ditzel has spent a lot of time researching such organic alternatives that he believes many in the community would rather use. “This stuff is not a secret,” said Ditzel, “it is just less cost effective.”

“People who are committed to helping the environment are willing to pay a little extra,” said Ditzel, a belief that he hopes will make his business a sure success.  “They already pay a little more for organic food.”

Ditzel who is also committed to working with local vendors and hiring local workers, promises that going organic is a lifestyle change that could really make a difference.

“If you want a yard like you see at Augusta, it may not be for you,” said Ditzel, “but if you want a nice yard, we can do that.”
