Shredding Event Yields 4 Tons of Destroyed Documents

More than four tons of recycled paper was gathered this weekend at a shredding event sponsored by an organizing service in Arnold.

Hundreds of people brought in their old boxes, bins and bags of documents to the shredding event hosted by KD SpaceLifts. Saturday’s "Shred-A-Thon," held on Broadwater Road in Arnold, was the first time SpaceLifts had hosted this kind of event, but owner Kathleen "KD" Durham said she was encouraged by the turnout. 

"Everyone I spoke with was so relieved to be rid of the paper clutter,” Durham said. “Piles of old documents can become a real physical and mental block.”

Document destruction was provided by The Shred Mill, an Anne Arundel County-based business. Owner Peggy Rogers said the shredding process from this event took about six hours.

Documents could be left for shredding or participants could wait in line to witness their material being destroyed by the machine.

Pete Regala of Arnold was one of many participants hauling boxes of old business documents in need of disposal. He and son Peter emptied their papers into a bin beside the Shred Mill truck housing an industrial shredding machine.

Rogers said participants typically bring financial papers, old school work and personal correspondence.

“We met so many wonderful people,” Durham said. “I am thrilled with the response and will definitely sponsor this type of event again."
