Centrowitz Drops From Weekend Race, but On Track for Championship Run

Hometown running sensation Matthew Centrowitz will be among three US runners in the upcoming World Championships in Moscow.

Two days after hometown running sensation Matthew Centrowitz dropped out of his first race, his coach said there was nothing to worry about.

Centrowitz had dropped out of the 1500 meter run at the AREVA Diamond League meet in Paris with a little more than 250 meters to go, according to Letsrun.com. But his coach Alberto Salazar assured The Oregonian that the star track runner was embarrassed, but "completely OK."

The race was the first that Centrowitz has ever dropped out of, Salazar said, and attributed the action to jet lag and exhaustion over the days leading up to the Paris 1500 race.

Centrowitz, an Arnold native and graduate of Broadneck High School, came a hair short of a bronze medal in the men's 1500 finals during the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games. Since then he has been racing throughout the world track and field circuit and is on track for the year's biggest race in August.

Centrowitz was the first of his three US counterparts to secure a spot in the upcoming World Outdoor Championships in Moscow, which run from August 10 through 18. Centrowitz will be running with fellow Olympian Leo Manzano and Lopez Lomong—the three runners were the top three in the June national championships.
