Church Invites Broadneck Community to Reflect on 9/11 Anniversary
St. Andrew by the Bay invites the community at large to attend an evening prayer service of remembrance on Sunday.
With the anniversary of the Sept. 11 tragedies on the horizon, Zack Stachowski felt his church should do something to support a parish that includes so many military families. As director of liturgy and music at on College Parkway near Cape St. Claire, Stachowski and his colleagues decided an ecumenical service was the right tribute.
“The idea for the service comes from the fact that we are at the 10th anniversary of the tragic events of 9/11 and we are a parish which serves many members of the military community,” Stachowski said. “We felt there was a need for the parish to accommodate those families who have loved ones actively serving in the military, or knew people affected by the attacks.”
On Sunday, Sept. 11, St. Andrew will open its doors to the entire Broadneck community with "Remembering 9/11: An evening prayer service of remembrance." The ecumenical service begins at 7:30 p.m. and will reflect on the 10 years since Sept. 11, 2001.

On that date a decade ago, foreign terrorists hijacked and flew jetliners into both towers of the World Trade Center in New York City and into the Pentagon across the Potomac River from Washington, DC. A fourth plane headed for the White House crashed into a field in Pennsylvania after passengers overtook the hijackers and diverted the plane. Approximately 2,800 perished in the largest terrorist attacks ever on U.S. soil.
Stachowski said the service will feature a lot of music and hymns. People are also asked to bring photographs or mementos of those who are actively serving. The idea is to create a shrine of everyone’s photos and mementos. The service will also includes two places were people can speak the names of those in their prayers.

This is the first time for such a service and Stachowski said he is not sure what to expect in terms of attendance, but he has heard several positive comments so far. Originally the plan was to develop a service just for St. Andrew’s members. However, everyone involved felt it was important to include the community at large.
“We sent an invitation to all the other churches and places of worship on the Broadneck peninsula,” Stachowski added.
The service is expected to last between an hour and 75 minutes.
