Fall Season Tryouts at Broadneck High

The competition is steep for local athletes as the assessments and team rosters are decided.

sports tryouts got underway Saturday as hundreds of kids showed up with paperwork in hand hoping to make the team.

Field Hockey tryouts had an early start time at the field house; golf could be found at the Eisenhouer Pavilion; and cross country was on the move. The lower fields were full of boys and girls soccer and both JV and Varsity football hopefuls were out on the turf field.

Inside the school volleyball players were in the gymnasium and cheerleading was in full swing in the auxillary gym.

School sports are a great way to stay in shape, have some fun, and compete with others but you have to get past the first step to even get on the team. Coaches are looking to build the most talented competitive teams but skill is not the only factor being measured at tryouts. A positive attitude and a willingness to be a team player can make the difference between making the cut and being sent home to try another year.

In the gymnasium, the first morning of volleyball tryouts started out with 18 non-returners going through drills with the coaches.

Assistant Coach Amanda Brunner has been coaching volleyball for eight years and is also a coach for softball and a math teacher at Broadneck.

“We have 22 returning players, two players graduated, and we chose 24 for the team,” she said.  “It’s equally competitive between the new players and the returning players, no one is guaranteed a spot on the team.”

Coach Rob Harris was on the field in his new position as Head Football Coach. He replaced . Harris served as defensive coordinator for the Bruins over the last five years.

Coming off the field after running drills, Matt Prince, sophomore and returning JV football player, said, “It looks like there are about 75 guys trying out for JV and the coach will pick no more than 50 to fill the team.”

New to BHS this fall is the competitive Pom Squad which held their tryouts early in the summer. Jennifer Kurdock will be preparing 15 girls for five regular season competitions and will premiere the group this year starting with the Freshman Orientation performance on Aug. 17 at BHS.

BHS fall sports tryouts wrap up Aug. 17, but until then, the BHS campus will be busy with warmup drills, practice games, intense fitness training and a lot of very competitive and anxious athletes.
