Hurricane Irene Updates for Broadneck Residents

Here is an early afternoon update as the area awaits impact.

In an effort to collect all of the relevant news for Broadneck Patch readers, we will provide updates with short bites of information from various sources throughout the day, as well as other local stories and blog posts as they come in.

Here is updated information as of 1 p.m. this afternoon:

County Executive John R. Leopold has declared a State of Emergency in anticipation of Hurricane Irene and is advising residents in the flood plain to evacuate.

Here is a list of storm surge areas in the county, including some in the Broadneck peninsula. 

The National Hurricane Center is forecasting that Hurricane Irene will move along the Delmarva coastline Saturday afternoon. Hurricane Irene is now a Category 2 hurricane with winds of 110 miles per hour and is expected to hold its intensity over the next 24 to 48 hours.

from Maryland to New Jersey, and coastal areas like Ocean City and parts of New York have been evacuated.

A shelter will be open on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Annapolis High School. Domestic pets will be welcomed. Please bring your pet’s food, medication, and vaccination records. Please remember all necessary supplies such as medications, sleeping bag and pillow, baby and elderly essentials, cash, and important documents. Prior to evacuating your home please secure all objects outside your home to minimize damage.

Due to the oncoming storm, all Anne Arundel County Public Schools activities as well as any activities scheduled at AACPS buildings and fields on Saturday and Sunday are canceled. Activities scheduled for tonight will proceed as scheduled, but all AACPS activities as well as any activities scheduled at AACPS buildings and fields on Saturday and Sunday are canceled.

Anne Arundel Community College will close at 6 p.m. on Sat. and not reopen until Monday morning.

AACPS has made no decisions regarding school operations for Monday, August 29.

Queen Anne’s County has declared a State of Emergency. All areas west of the Route 50/301 split are under mandatory evacuation orders. All residents in the effected areas should evacuate by noon Saturday at the latest. Residents should evacuate either north on Route 301 or west on Route 50.

The Bay Bridge will close when winds reach or exceed 55 miles per hour.
