If Walls Could Talk: Broadneck's Halls Get a New Look for Homecoming

Broadneck students decorate their class walls with a theme to fit the Halloween season this homecoming.

For students at Broadneck High School, homecoming can mean several things; the return of old alumnus, a highly anticipated football game and a great homecoming dance as well. However for several students, homecoming is time for the heralded class wall competition.

Each class is assigned a stairwell to decorate with things from that year’s theme. This year's theme was Halloween, which may seem like the obvious choice given homecoming’s proximity to Halloween, but the reality is that the theme will rotate from year to year. Last year’s walls, for example, were geared toward childhood memories, with walls featuring "Toy Story" and the "Chronicles of Narnia."

The night before unveiling, Broadneck students, parents and teachers alike will work until 9 p.m. to complete their walls—many students and teachers end up staying at Broadneck for the entirety of their day.

“It’s a lot of fun but it is kind of hard. It takes a lot of time” said Katie Crane, sophomore class member and Student Government Association co-vice president. “We recycle most of our stuff from past years with just different paint, and that can make things a bit easier.”

In addition to the class walls, several of Broadneck’s clubs are known for constructing their own walls; the Anime and KEY clubs’ walls, for example, are known for being particularly well done.

As is tradition, each class wall is pitted against each other to determine the best wall, with the winner announced at the pre-Homecoming pep rally. Usually it is the seniors who win this competition, because they’re allowed more space and time to build.

However, this year it was the sophomores who ended up with the victory, the same class who finished construction of their wall with more than two hours to spare.
