New Broadneck Playground Design to be Unveiled at Weekend Kite Fest

Sunday's kite festival at Broadneck Park will be highlighted by the unveiling of new plans for the park playground.

More than a year's worth of fundraising at Broadneck Park is about to pay off.

An impending renovation of the park's playground will have its design shown off at this Sunday's Broadneck Kite Festival.

"We are pleased to reveal the new playground design this Sunday at the Kite Festival/Community Picnic! Recreation and Parks is in charge of the new installation. I will keep you posted as soon as I have a timeline, but I think it should be completed by June, fingers crossed," according to an update on the Facebook page of the Friends of Broadneck Park (FBP).

The second-annual Kite Festival will kickoff at the park Sunday at noon. There will be no kites for sale, but FBP organizer Kara McGuirk-Allison said they can be found at several retail outlets around town, including Target and Five-Below in Annapolis and Franklin's Toys in Severna Park.

Fundraising efforts began for McGuirk-Allison late in 2011. She started her campaign after seeing playground equipment go unfixed. The Friends of Broadneck Park (FBP) campaign was created to pay for a new playground.

The FBP's campaign came to a close shortly after Anne Arundel County Department of Recreation and Parks gave the green light on a renovation project that will tear down the existing playground at Broadneck park and replace it with all new equipment. The county is chipping in $35,000 to the effort.
