POLL: Would You Support a New Stormwater Fee for Bay Restoration?

The bill's future may be in flux, but the issue isn't dead, councilmen said.

Living on a peninsula makes Broadneck's residents a little more tied to the Chesapeake Bay's fate than some other county residents. But are you willing to fund restoration efforts in the current economy?

After Tuesday's Anne Arundel County Council meeting, the future appears uncertain for a proposed $35 stormwater fee. But councilmen have promised that this wasn't the end.

Councilman Chris Trumbauer (D-6th District) pulled his bill seeking the stormwater fee that would have funded Chesapeake Bay restoration efforts. He said the timing on the bill just wasn't right.

However, he vowed that this was not the end, and the bill would be back in one form or another in the near future.

Stay tuned later Wednesday for a full story on the council meeting.

Support for the bill was negative from the county executive, mixed on the council,

So, where do you stand? Would you pay $35 annually toward a fund that would help improve the Bay for the future? Or is this just the wrong time for the county to be asking for more money?

Question should have nothing to do with the economy. We've talked about cleaning up the Bay for years, but haven't put our money where our mouth is. Question should be are you comfortable swimming in the Magothy/Severn Rivers and eating fish from there? Do you like oil slicks and garbage on our shores? If not, then do something about it -- $3/month for a new stormwater fee should be just a start.

I personally agree, but the economic climate is a factor that's been put forward by many people in this discussion, including the county executive's representatives.
