Nearly 100 children and dozens of youth and adult volunteers spent the week of June 24-28 at St. Margaret’s Church in Annapolis participating in a memorable spiritual journey to Narnia.

The Vacation Bible School program allowed students to explore their faith by creating, reflecting, acting, learning, and playing through lessons taken from the popular book and movie series.

“Our journey was amazing. The week brought us so many adventures,” said the Rev. Sarah Lamming, Associate Rector for Youth Formation at St. Margaret’s.

Groups of 8-10 members were led by two or three youth leaders and adult supervisors. The children visited between six and eight activity stations each day that included games, crafts, music, movie clips, skits and healthy snacks. And each day, there was a focus on Bible stories that connected to parts of the Narnia stories.

“The reflection room brought out some profound comments from the young children,” said Lamming. “They also loved their prayer journals in which they could write or draw at any time.”

The new drama component was a huge hit, with volunteer Vicki Mattock leading bible stories about Moses and David.  “Comparing the Aslan character with God has led to discussions about gifts we are given and how God wants to protect us,” Mattock said.

The week ended with a ceremony that provided parents the opportunity to hear the songs the children learned, to see participants act out some of the bible stories, and to enjoy fellowship time each other.
