1. Police Launch Campaign Against 'The Pit'

Students loitering behind Broadneck High School will soon have uniformed police officers and more elements of law enforcement keenly watching their every move.

At a community meeting in Cape St. Claire's clubhouse on Monday evening, officials from local police, schools and nearby residents gathered to discuss what could be done about "The Pit," an area behind the high school where students gather before and after classes.

2. Shane & Kauffman Salon Closing After 16 Years

Shane & Kauffman Salon in Arnold is closing for business after 16 years, the store's co-owner said Friday. The salon, which occupies the lower portion of Honeysuckle Quality Consignment at 1564 Ritchie Highway in Arnold, has been in operation since 1996, when it opened as Rick Shane Salon. But starting in April, the lease for the building will be up, and the salon will close its doors for good.

3. Local Middle Schoolers Sweep State Black Saga with Perfect Scores

A team of eighth-graders from Severn River Middle School took top honors in this year's Black Saga Competition. The winning team consisted of 8th graders Jasper Frazee, Ethan O'Malley and Phillip Schofield. The same team won the competition back when they were sixth-graders.

4. Go Behind the Curtain with Broadneck Student's 'Hairspray' Documentary

The student documentary, filmed and edited by Abigail Coale, follows the cast of the high school musical Hairspray, which debuted at Broadneck High School on Feb. 28. The extensive production is just under an hour long. Throughout it, Coale interviews each cast member about their contribution to the musical, and features behind-the-scenes footage as students learn their choreography and more about working together on the stage.

5.  Undefeated Middle School Broadneck Hockey Team Takes National Title

The Broadneck Bruins middle school ice hockey team won the championship game of the Ashburn Middle School Hockey Tournament and finished undefeated in the four-game event. The Bruins earned their victory against semi-finalist Western Loudoun County in a 3-2 shootout after an intense, well-matched game that ended in a 2-2 tie.
