BRRR! 2014 Plunge is Next Week

Last year, Anne Arundel schools raised of thousands of dollars for the Plungefest, and this year is shaping up no differently.

Students, athletes and charitable, cold-weather crazies are preparing for the 18th annual Polar Bear Plunge, set to kick off Jan. 25 at Sandy Point State Park in Annapolis.

The annual Plungefest, hosted by the Maryland State Police, helps to raise money for Special Olympics Maryland. Thousands of plungers, sponsored by friends, family and neighbors, toss themselves into frigid, Chesapeake Bay water.

Participating schools from across the state will gather on the beach the day before the plunge for the annual Frigid Friday event set aside just for students.

Last year, Anne Arundel schools raised of thousands of dollars, with South River High taking the lead; and this year is shaping up no differently, with the Seahawks having raised nearly $3,000.

See how other schools are doing in this year's donation drive on the official Frigid Friday website.

Patch will provide ongoing coverage for the Plungefest as it gears up for its final week.
