Patch, Facebook Help Find a Home for Pooch

A desperate dog-owner needed help this weekend and reached out to Patch and Facebook.

It's never easy to part with a beloved pet. But it's easier when you know they're going to a good owner.

Broadneck resident Kelly Hennessy-Heinz had received notice from Anne Arundel County Animal Control that she had one too many dogs.

The county's rules say any home with more than four dogs is the equivalent of a dog kennel and is subject to special regulations, including fees.

The plan was to have Hennessy-Heinz' ex-husband take two of the five dogs, but that fell through. An adoption for one of the dogs also fell through.

After Hennessy-Heinz' neighbor called the county because of the dogs in her yard, she had a deadline to find a home for Lily, an 8-year-old beagle mix.

"This is a heartbreaking situation for my family. My 9-year-old son was allowed to pick who would go, not easy, she is loved," Hennessy-Heinz wrote on her Facebook wall.

On Sunday, a few hours before that deadline, Hennessy-Heinz reached out to me, asking how to help find a home for Lily. Together we posted Lily's predicament on Facebook. Within a few hours, the response was huge.

"The outpouring from people was overhwleming," Hennessy-Heinz said Monday morning. "I found someone in Annapolis, an older woman with a fenced-in yard who is home all day. It's going to be a great situation."

Even after Lily found a home, the Facebook and Patch postings proved to be a little too successful. Hennessy-Heinz is still getting calls and emails about the pooch.

"It's really wonderful though, the network of support that's here—people really wanted to help," Hennessy-Heinz said. "Thank you so much, everyone, for the care, networking and support. Sometimes it really takes a village."
