Rain Barrels Help Plants, Environment

The barrels are available for preorder in Cape St. Claire and will be delivered in June.

Spring rains are drawing near, and it's the perfect time to think about investing in a rain barrel.

These barrels can save you money by reducing your water bill and help the environment by reducing water runoff to local waterways, said Cape St. Claire Garden Club member Audrey Lengbeyer. The collected rain can be used to water your plants, or any other number of uses, she said.

The Cape St. Claire Garden Club recently began offering preorders for rain barrels priced at $95. The barrels themselves can hold 53 gallons of water, and are created from used, food-grade barrels. Each is equipped with brass spigots to attach garden hoses, and a screen to keep bugs out.

The barrels can be preordered online and will be delivered on June 16 in Cape St. Claire. Payment is due upon pickup. For those without an Internet connection, orders can be placed by calling Audrey Lengbeyer at 410-757-5175.

With every rain barrel sold, $20 goes toward the Goshen Farm Preservation Society—a nonprofit that exists to restore the historic Goshen Farm and its surrounding property in Cape St. Claire for future generations.
