West Street Townhouses On The Horizon

The Bozzuto Group, developer of the high-rise Mariner Bay Apartments at Towne Center, is making plans for a grassy tract in the middle of the West Street corridor. The Greenbelt developer has the former Capital Newspaper headquarters at 213 West under contract, and is seeking a text amendment at the City that will allow it to develop the site with 23 towns and seven singles.

Bozzuto wants a waiver from the MX zoning requirement for first-floor retail. Bozzuto officials say there is too much vacant retail along West Street as it is, and adding to the supply is financially infeasible.

The former Capital building, was torn down in 1993 and has been a vacant lot since. Madison Homes controlled it at one point and sought to build about 40 condominiums.
