Foods That Keep You Focused

Top 5 superfoods to keep you focused, plus a recipe for a power breakfast.

Feeling a bit scattered lately? Hard to focus?

There is a lot of hype about foods that can do everything from sharpen focus and concentration, to enhance memory, and  boost brain power. AND even get us rock-hard abs (nothing to do with the topic, but just sayin’).

But do they really work? We are in luck. There are certain foods that can help scattered thinking. Also, if Adult ADHD is something you are concerned about, then these foods will help you feel more alert, awake, and aware.

Here is a list of the top five super foods for brain power:

1.  Sugar. I know, I know. I just ranted about the sugar thing! Sugar is your brain’s preferred fuel source — not table sugar, but glucose, which your body metabolizes from the sugars and carbohydrates you eat. That’s why a glass of something sweet to drink can offer a short-term boost to memory, thinking processes, and focus. Watch what you drink, though. Make sure it is natural. Check those labels! Also, if you consume too much, your focus can be impaired as well as lead to weight gain. Keep the balance on this one.

2.  Fish. A protein source associated with a great brain boost is fish — rich in omega 3 fatty acids, essential for brain function and development. These healthy fats have amazing brain power: higher dietary omega 3 fatty acids are linked to lower dementia and may play a vital role in enhancing concentration, especially as we get older. For brain health, try to eat two servings of fish weekly.

3.  Nuts and seeds. Nuts and seeds are good sources of the antioxidant vitamin E, which is associated with less mental decline as you age.

4.  Whole grains. Every organ in the body depends on blood flow, especially the heart and brain. Eating a diet high in whole grains (and not just the bread…see my latest post on the right carbs to eat) can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and lower bad cholesterol. This reduces your risk of plaque buildup and enhances blood flow, offering a tasty way to fire up brain cells.

5.  Blueberries.

Plus you gotta eat a good breakfast. I know, I know. You heard this before, but it is so crucial for keeping your brain working properly during your busy day.

Check out my power breakfast:

Oatmeal with Bananas, Walnuts, and Blueberries

Serves 1

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups water

3/4 cup of rolled oats

1/2 tsp. of ground cinnamon

1 tsp. of ground flaxseed

1/4 cup frozen blueberries

1 banana sliced

2 Tbsp. unsalted walnuts (you can roast them if you want)

Bring water to boil in a small pan. Add oats, cinnamon, and salt. Reduce to a steady simmer and cook, stirring occasionally, until oats are tender, about 5 minutes. Add blueberries.  Top with banana and walnuts.
