My first blog...about wine!

A nice little rose from Italy...

Welcome to my first foray into the world of blog, blogs, or maybe blogging. I have no idea where this will take us. As some of you may know, I work as the wine manager at Fishpaws Marketplace. I have passed the level 3 Sommelier exam and in my position I come across many different wines, so in theory I can appreciate the good from the bad.

Today I want to begin discussing wines that I buy.  Yes, I do have to buy wines for my house to drink at home. I do not believe that Kim would like to fund my fairly literate pursuit in furthering my wine exploration. While not all these wines will come from Fishpaws, a good portion will. (The inner Ralph Nader in me just cringed). Back on topic, let’s get to the first wine.

As spring finally graces us with its yearly arrival, so do the rose wines. I’ve always liked this time of year, more for the fact that I don’t believe people are meant to live in temperatures below 75, than the wine, but that’s just me. At the same time, it’s not to discredit the unique wine this season offers.

Now, don’t automatically associate sweet with rose as people often do because most of these wines are actually dry. In celebration of warm weather, I brought home a Masciarelli Rosato. The wine is made from Montepulciano grapes from the Colline Teatine IGT (let me know how much wine geek-dom and education you would like and I will try to include it in future posts.)

The wine is lovely with a nose of roses and cherry. The fruit continues on the palate and gets a little deeper adding definite mineral traces. A lively acidity brightens everything and keeps the fruit from being over the top. The slight tannins balance the wine and add a backbone for the rest of the flavor notes to stand. This wine will be perfect for tuna steaks or pork on a grill. Or like me, just sitting on my deck admiring the holes that my new puppy has dug in my back yard that I have spent the last month manicuring, and planting, and mulching, and well you get the picture.
