Travelers across the Bay Bridge ran into major backups Wednesday afternoon
following a crash that reportedly involved a police officer.

At 12:09 p.m. on Wednesday, two vehicles collided on Route 50 near the exit for Romancoke Road, according to the Coordinated Highways Action Response Team.

Police continue to investigate what led up to the crash, which occurred when a driver ran into a Maryland Transportation Authority vehicle that was on the side of the road, CBS Salisbury reported.

Following the collision, a pair of helicopters picked up two individuals and flew them to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center for medical treatment, according to WNEW.

One of the injured was a Maryland Transportation Authority officer, ABC 2 News reported.

Both the officer and the driver of the other vehicle were in serious condition Wednesday afternoon, according to The Baltimore Sun, which reported the officer was responsive.

As a result of the collision, some drivers were stuck for two hours on the Bay Bridge, where toll lanes were closed during the police investigation, according to CBS DC.

At 3:45 p.m., the Maryland Transportation Authority reported all lanes were open, although major backups persisted on Route 50. According to The Baltimore Suntraffic was stacked up for 7 miles on either side of the bridge.

By 6:30 p.m., transportation officials said that all delays had cleared on Route 50.
